Houthi forces, supported by Iran, have intensified attacks across multiple fronts in Yemen over the past 24 hours. The group has targeted infrastructure, residential areas with artillery and drone strikes, while engaging in clashes with government forces in Taiz, Hodeidah, and Dhale provinces. The escalation has extended to areas near the Al-Wadiah border crossing and the Al-Abr region in Hadhramaut.

A field source reported that four fuel tankers were destroyed following a Houthi shelling near the Al-Wadiah border crossing. The nature of any human casualties resulting from this incident remains unclear. In Hadhramaut, a Houthi drone targeted a hangar in Al-Abr, causing material damage, according to local sources.

In Taiz, intermittent clashes erupted between government forces and Houthi militias on the northern front of the city, with similar engagements occurring in the Al-Kuraifat front east of Taiz. Government forces reportedly targeted a Houthi vehicle on the Al-Aqrosh front in the south of the province, resulting in injuries to one Houthi fighter.

On the western coast, National Resistance forces announced the thwarting of a large-scale Houthi offensive on their positions in the Hays front of Hodeidah province. This assault coincided with artillery shelling that impacted residential villages and displacement camps. Military sources indicated that one of the National Resistance brigades repelled a surprise attack by Houthi elements towards Jabal Dawbas, north of Hays district. Intense fighting ensued for approximately two hours, involving various types of weaponry, resulting in casualties among the attackers and the flight of several Houthi elements.

The offensive was accompanied by Houthi artillery fire that struck four liberated residential villages north of Hays district with over 20 mortar shells. Houthi shelling targeted the villages of Al-Haraz, Al-Marjim, Mashia, and Al-Bugheil, which are inhabited by civilians and displaced persons, causing fear, panic, and damage to homes and property. Some families have been forced to evacuate their homes in search of safer locations due to the continued shelling.

In western Taiz, local sources reported intensive Houthi shelling on the Hamir, Al-Ashmala, and Al-Yaman areas in the Maqbanah district, raising concerns of civilian casualties and property damage. In Dhale province, a civilian was injured by a Houthi drone strike on a farm north of Murais. This incident followed an earlier Houthi mortar attack on a passenger vehicle traveling from Sana'a to Aden on the main road in the Murais area, which injured two civilians.

Since early July, Yemen has experienced a significant Houthi escalation, targeting civilian facilities, vital installations, and commercial sites, including the port of Mocha, as well as areas in the west coast and Marib province. Reports indicate dozens of civilian casualties, damage to property and infrastructure, and disruption to the livelihoods of thousands of workers.

Amidst the ongoing escalation, Yemeni activists and citizens have called upon the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council and the coalition command to make decisive political and military decisions to complete the liberation of areas under Houthi control, end the coup, and restore state institutions. They expressed their readiness to participate in the battle to reclaim state institutions and urged an end to the military and political stalemate, which they believe prolongs the suffering of Yemenis and exacerbates the crisis. They also warned of the continued threats posed by the Houthis to Yemen, the region, and international shipping lanes.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced on Monday the launch of a sweeping economic sanctions campaign against Iran, dubbed "Economic Pariah." The initiative aims to dismantle financing networks supporting the Iranian government and the Revolutionary Guard Corps, and to block channels Tehran uses to circumvent sanctions and fund its military programs and regional activities.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the campaign represents an "economic assault" targeting Iran's global financial ties, emphasizing Washington's objective to "cut off the economic lifelines that sustain the Iranian regime." Bessent warned that the Trump administration's actions, which he described as "long overdue," would hold nations and entities continuing to engage with Iran accountable, potentially facing punitive measures and financial isolation.

According to the Treasury Department, the initial phase of the operation involves expanding secondary sanctions against individuals, companies, and entities that assist Iran in accessing the global financial system or facilitate sanctions evasion. The Office of Foreign Assets Control has imposed sanctions on approximately 60 individuals, entities, and vessels linked to Iranian networks operating in the oil, shipping, technology, aviation, digital assets, and gold sectors.

The new sanctions grant U.S. authorities broader powers to target any foreign entity operating in specific sectors of the Iranian economy or providing supporting services. Targeted sectors include digital assets, due to the increasing use of cryptocurrencies to evade sanctions and fund activities linked to the Revolutionary Guard Corps; the technology sector, through which Tehran seeks to acquire advanced technologies for its military and missile programs; and the gold sector, as Tehran increasingly relies on it to maintain the value of its local currency amidst a severe economic crisis. The aviation sector, where Iranian airlines are allegedly used to transport military personnel and equipment, and the maritime shipping sector are also included.

The Treasury Department indicated it has targeted international networks comprising intermediaries, companies, and vessels operating in several countries, including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Switzerland, accusing them of aiding in the transfer of Iranian oil and its proceeds to entities associated with the Revolutionary Guard Corps. It also announced sanctions against companies and individuals involved in facilitating the sale of Iranian oil and petrochemical products through clandestine channels, as well as a network accused of helping Iran acquire sensitive technologies related to nuclear research and ballistic missile development.

In the cyber domain, sanctions have been imposed on individuals and networks linked to Iran's Ministry of Intelligence, accused of conducting cyberattacks against critical infrastructure and U.S. companies, and stealing data and digital assets. Some of these entities are alleged to have targeted energy, health, technology, and financial institutions within the United States. Concurrently, Washington has initiated communication with governments worldwide to urge them to cease Iran-related activities, warning of repercussions for non-compliant nations or companies. The fundamental message of the campaign, the Treasury stated, is to present Iran with a choice: "economic isolation or a return to the global economy on new terms." This action occurs amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran concerning Iran's nuclear program, its regional military activities, and the Revolutionary Guard Corps' support for its regional allies.

This operation is part of ongoing efforts to rid Yemeni territories of remnants left by Houthi militias.

The project's media office stated that the total items cleared during this period included 9,018 unexploded ordnance, 162 anti-tank mines, 48 anti-personnel mines, and 52 improvised explosive devices. Concurrently, Masam teams successfully cleared 1,002,229 square meters of land. This work is crucial in mitigating the dangers posed by mines and explosives, which threaten civilian lives, and in making affected areas safer for residents to return and resume various activities.

During the third week of August specifically, the project's teams disarmed 1,836 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices. This figure comprised 1,792 pieces of unexploded ordnance, 25 anti-tank mines, 13 anti-personnel mines, and 6 explosive devices. Over the past week, the teams cleared 355,679 square meters of land as part of their survey, clearance, and removal operations of war remnants across several Yemeni regions.

In the Midi district of Hajjah governorate, the project reported that its teams have removed 12,854 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices since commencing operations in the area.
According to field sources, the missile attack, carried out by Houthi militias, directly struck cargo trucks, lorries, and passenger vehicles on the international road leading to the crossing. Shrapnel and the resulting fires in the area caused injuries to civilians.

Firefighting teams and relevant authorities have commenced efforts to combat and control the blazes. The final casualty count and the extent of material damage resulting from the attack remain unclear at this time.

The Al-Wadiah crossing serves as the primary land route between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, experiencing significant traffic from travelers and commercial trucks. The targeting of its surroundings poses a direct threat to civilian movement and land trade.

Continuous artillery, missile, and drone shelling by the Houthi militia has forced 158 families to flee their homes in Yemen's Hodeidah Governorate, seeking refuge in the districts of Hays and Khokha amid dire humanitarian conditions and a severe lack of essential supplies.

Humanitarian sources reported that 124 families displaced to Hays District, originating from Al-Jarrahi, Jabal Ras, and Maqbanah Shamir in Taiz Governorate. An additional 34 families arrived in Khokha District, having fled Al-Jarrahi, Jabal Ras, the peaks of Dubbas mountains north of Hays, and other areas within Hodeidah Governorate.

The displaced families escaped escalating Houthi attacks that targeted civilian areas, homes, and displacement camps. Many were forced to sleep outdoors or seek shelter under rocks in locations lacking basic services, highlighting an urgent need for shelter, food, relief, and humanitarian aid.

Recent incidents include Houthi mortar shelling on civilian homes in the coastal Al-Haima area of Al-Tuhayta District, which injured a woman and a young man with shrapnel wounds. On Tuesday, the militia launched missile and artillery attacks on populated areas in Khokha and Hays, resulting in the deaths of three civilians and injuries to two young sisters in separate incidents.

Jamal Mashra'i, Director-General of the Executive Unit for the Management of Camps for the Displaced in Hodeidah, stated that the unit, in coordination with the Access Humanitarian Organization and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, has begun providing shelter to the displaced. Interventions have included shelter for 57 families, with materials also provided by the International Rescue Committee and 90 emergency kits from the International Organization for Migration.

However, Mashra'i noted that the remaining displaced families have yet to receive any relief response and appealed to international and local organizations for urgent intervention to meet their basic needs. He emphasized that the lack of food aid exacerbates the suffering of these families amidst ongoing displacement and deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the western coastal regions.

Since early July, the Houthi militia has intensified its military escalation and attacks on civilian and vital infrastructure, including the port of Mocha and various areas in the western coast and Marib Governorate. These actions have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, significant property damage, and the disruption of livelihoods for thousands, all occurring under what is described as a concerning international silence.

Two civilians, including one Somali national, were injured on Sunday when Houthi militias targeted a civilian vehicle with a drone projectile in the northern Mreiss district of Dhale Governorate. The incident marks a new escalation in attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the region.

Local sources reported that the injured individuals were traveling in the targeted vehicle from Sana'a to Aden on the main asphalt road. Separately, another person of Somali nationality sustained injuries under similar circumstances on the same main road.

Concurrently, Houthi militias intensified their indiscriminate shelling of areas north of Mreiss since Sunday morning, deploying mortar shells and drone projectiles. Approximately 86 projectiles were reportedly fired, accompanied by drone activity throughout the morning hours.

The majority of the attacks impacted farmlands, residential areas, and surrounding villages. The road connecting Mreiss and the city of Damt, a route with significant civilian and vehicular traffic, was also affected, heightening the risks for civilians and travelers.

This Houthi escalation occurs amidst the militia's continued use of indiscriminate shelling and drones to target civilian areas, agricultural lands, and facilities in northern Dhale. These actions represent a recurring violation of resident safety and a direct threat to civilian movement on public roads.

These attacks underscore the Houthi militia's persistent strategy of endangering civilians by targeting populated areas and vital routes with projectiles and drones, aiming to instill fear and disrupt public life and movement in areas near conflict lines.

Local and human rights organizations are calling for the documentation of these violations, accountability for those responsible, and a deterrent international stance against targeting civilians and civilian objects to ensure resident protection and prevent further military escalation.

Ambassador Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, Deputy Chairman of the General People's Congress (GPC), extended congratulations to the GPC's leadership, members, and supporters on the occasion of the party's 44th anniversary, urging a collective effort to restore the state and unify the national front.

In a statement marking the anniversary, Saleh emphasized that the occasion transcends a mere political commemoration, representing a long national history filled with challenges and transformations. He called for a re-evaluation of the GPC's foundational principles and a responsible assessment of the present, coupled with unwavering confidence and determination for the future.

Saleh recalled the GPC's establishment in August 1982 as an expression of pure Yemeni national will, aiming to create an inclusive political framework that transcends narrow divisions. He highlighted the party's commitment to moderation, partnership, democracy, and pluralism, with the National Charter serving as its intellectual and political reference point. He asserted that the GPC has proven to be an integral part of the Yemeni national conscience, its strength residing in its resilient popular base rather than mere positions or institutions.

Acknowledging the difficult years and the attempts to target, dismantle, and fragment the GPC, Saleh paid tribute to the leaders and cadres who became martyrs, including the party's founder, the late leader Ali Abdullah Saleh, and its late Secretary-General, Arif Awad Al-Zouka. He stressed that the GPC's survival is rooted in its deep national ties and its supporters, who embody a national project and a political legacy that cannot be eradicated.

Saleh articulated that Yemen stands at a critical juncture, requiring more than slogans or side conflicts. He defined Yemen's true battle as the restoration of the state, national decision-making, the end of division, the protection of the Republic, and the safeguarding of sovereignty and unity. He stressed the need for an independent Yemeni decision-making process, the construction of strong state institutions, and armed forces loyal to Yemen and the Republic, not to specific individuals or narrow agendas.

He underscored the significance of Yemeni unity, culminating in the 1990 declaration of the Republic, as a cornerstone of modern Yemen. Maintaining this unity, he argued, requires a just state, robust institutions, genuine national partnership, the guarantee of rights and freedoms, and the eradication of all forms of injustice and exclusion. Saleh urged the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to transition from crisis management to solution-building, to engage directly with the populace, and to assume full responsibility for addressing the currency's collapse, service deterioration, and the decline of state institutions.

Saleh concluded by emphasizing that confronting the Houthi project, which he described as having usurped state institutions and undermined the republican system, necessitates unifying the national front. He called for a broad national alliance encompassing all political, military, and social forces, transcending past grievances, to focus on the singular objective of restoring the state and the republican system. He asserted that the GPC remains committed to being a voice of reason and moderation, a pillar of stability, and a supporter of any sincere national effort aimed at rescuing Yemen and restoring its sovereignty and standing, with Yemen, the state, and the principles of the Republic, unity, sovereignty, freedom, and dignity as unwavering constants.

The meeting addressed strategies for mobilizing the community to support military fronts and counter Houthi attacks targeting civilian infrastructure in the West Coast, Taiz, Marib, Dhale, and other governorates. Participants also discussed the threat posed to navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab strait.

Attendees emphasized the crucial role of religious scholars and orators in refuting Houthi falsehoods and slogans, clarifying the religious stance on attacks against Mokha port, vessels, and civilian assets. They stressed the importance of exposing the militia's justifications for its aggressions and raising public awareness about the dangers of Yemen being exploited to serve Iran's Revolutionary Guard agenda.

The gathering underscored the necessity of promoting moderation and tolerance, preserving Yemeni religious and cultural identity, and reinforcing national loyalty and belonging. It also called for unity, the abandonment of discord, strengthening social cohesion, countering Houthi propaganda, and rallying efforts towards restoring the state and the capital, Sanaa.

Participants reiterated the significance of continued support in confronting the Houthi-Iranian project, which threatens Yemen, the region, and international navigation. They stressed the imperative of directing religious discourse to uphold national principles and bolster societal resilience against existing challenges.

International security reports have issued stark warnings regarding an escalating coordination between Houthi militias and Somali piracy networks, a development that could significantly amplify the dangers facing commercial vessels and maritime traffic in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and surrounding Somali waters.

Security experts cited by Reuters indicate that smuggling networks operating between Yemen and Somalia, previously involved in arms and human trafficking, are now undertaking more perilous roles. These networks are reportedly providing logistical support and facilitating operations to attack and seize vessels.

These warnings coincide with the seizure of the oil tanker "Sibo 1," a vessel flying the Eritrean flag, by armed individuals who are steering it towards the Somali coast. This incident underscores the increasing security threats in vital maritime corridors.

Data presented in the reports reveals a notable increase in maritime attacks, with 13 vessels targeted this year compared to five in 2025, indicating a rise in the frequency of assaults on international trade routes.

Specialists suggest that the diversion of international naval forces to counter Houthi attacks in the Red Sea has created security vulnerabilities, allowing piracy networks to intensify their activities in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters.

Experts caution that the continuation of this coordinated activity could lead to a broader scope of ship hijackings, escalating risks to global trade lines and the freedom of international navigation through one of the most critical maritime arteries connecting Asia and Europe.

Previous reports from Khaleej Times, citing intelligence sources, had revealed the arrival of dozens of Al-Shabaab militants from Somalia to Yemen via coastal routes, with some proceeding to the Shabwah and Marib governorates. Information also emerged about meetings held with elements affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, alongside other movements involving the Al Bayda governorate and meetings with Houthi leadership, all suggesting a growing network of cooperation between armed groups active in Yemen and Somalia.

According to these sources, suspected forms of cooperation include facilitating the movement of operatives, exchanging expertise, and providing logistical support. This is in addition to cross-border smuggling networks believed to supply weapons, narcotics, and funding sources to these armed factions. Observers have warned that the strengthening of these ties could entrench the interconnectedness of extremist groups and smugglers on both sides of the Gulf of Aden, thereby exacerbating security risks for Yemen and international maritime routes.

August 24th marks a significant date in Yemeni history, commemorating the founding of the General People's Congress (GPC) in 1982. This event heralded a political experiment rooted in a broad national project focused on establishing a state, its institutions, and fostering popular participation.

The GPC was conceived not merely as a traditional political party but as an inclusive framework designed to unite diverse political, social, and national currents under a single banner. Its aim was to formulate a national vision that addressed the multifaceted issues of state, society, development, and politics. The inaugural GPC conference in Sana'a during August 1982 ratified the National Charter as the foundational document for political action, alongside the organization's structures and bylaws. The preparation of the National Charter itself involved extensive public consultation through popular committees before its final approval.

Central to the GPC's ideology and its National Charter was the concept of statehood—a state built upon the constitution and law, characterized by civil institutions, organized administration, political participation, and the safeguarding of national sovereignty. Over the years, these principles translated into tangible progress, marked by the expansion of state apparatus and institutions. Significant investments were made in sectors such as education, health, infrastructure, and local governance, becoming integral to the daily lives of Yemenis.

For generations born in the 1980s and 1990s, the concept of the state was not an abstract theory but a lived reality. It was the school attended daily, the hospital sought in times of illness, the road traversed during travel, the university aspired to, and the government office visited for administrative tasks. It encompassed the regular salary expected by employees and the electoral process where citizens cast their votes. The collective memory of this generation therefore offers a distinct social narrative, detailing the state's presence not from behind office desks, but through the minutiae of everyday existence.

Personal testimonies from this era underscore the tangible impact of state development. Heitham Al-Qaisi, born in the 1980s, recalls a childhood where basic needs were met, remembering educational facilities, water services, schools, hospitals, universities, and road projects. He also participated in multiple elections, experiencing democracy as a lived practice rather than a mere political term. Similarly, Jamila Hussein, an educator, highlights the professional stability and support teachers received, including regular salaries, bonuses, and additional remuneration during holidays. This stability, she argues, allowed educators to focus on their mission, viewing teaching as a national duty.

The period following Yemeni unification in 1990 ushered in an era of multiparty politics, with elections becoming a primary mechanism for political engagement. National and local elections were held consistently throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, with the GPC actively participating alongside other political parties. The 1993 parliamentary elections, the first pluralistic elections post-unification, and the 2003 elections, which saw a 76.6% turnout, were particularly noteworthy. The 1999 presidential election marked the country's first competitive direct presidential vote. These electoral processes normalized citizen participation in public life, fostering a generation that understood the significance of their vote and the democratic process.

The founding of the GPC in 1982 is intrinsically linked to the broader narrative of Yemeni unification on May 22, 1990. The GPC played a pivotal role as a foundational entity for the unified Yemen, co-leading the transitional government and subsequently participating in coalition cabinets. Its journey from a political project to a national framework is inseparable from the establishment of the Republic of Yemen. Therefore, August 24th serves not only to recall the establishment of a national political entity but also to commemorate the birth of a unified Yemeni state.

The generation that experienced this era remembers the state not as a distant concept but through its direct impact: access to government education, expanded infrastructure, functioning hospitals and universities, electoral participation, and employment within state institutions. These tangible experiences—a teacher's salary, a student's school, a citizen's ballot box—define the true meaning of building a state of institutions. A state is constructed not through slogans but through the integration of its institutions into citizens' lives, where the law serves as a reference, public office is a responsibility, education is a right, health is a service, and elections are a means of participation.

Forty-four years after the GPC's inception, the legacy of August 24th continues to evoke a significant chapter in modern Yemeni history. This period is associated with national political action, the National Charter, state institutions, Yemeni unification, and the experience of electoral politics and multiparty democracy. However, the enduring value of this commemoration lies in the lived experiences of the individuals who navigated this era. The true archive resides not only in documents but in human memory—in the recollections of education, infrastructure, electoral participation, and professional stability. These are not mere personal anecdotes but testimonies of a generation that witnessed Yemen building its institutions and the state permeating daily life.

The commemoration of August 24th should transcend the anniversary of a party's founding; it should serve as an opportunity to reaffirm the vision of a strong Yemeni state with robust institutions, a nation that unites its people, and a democracy that empowers citizens as partners in decision-making. While political parties, policies, and leadership may evolve, the state remains the unifying framework. The generation that lived through this period bears the responsibility of transmitting its memory to new generations, not as a political tale, but as a human experience of education, work, electoral participation, and institution-building. The Yemen of yesterday was not merely a map or a slogan; it was a state in formation, with expanding institutions, open schools and universities, connecting roads, and citizens actively participating in its governance. This generation's memory interprets August 24th as a symbol of a political project intrinsically linked to the construction of the state, its institutions, democratic participation, and national unity. Ultimately, while times change, the value of national endeavors lies in the institutions, memories, and hopes they leave behind. The aspiration of yesterday's generation, and indeed today's, is for a nation governed by institutions, protected by the state and law, and where its citizens shape their future—a narrative encapsulated by the memory of a generation that witnessed the project of democracy and the state of institutions.

August 24, 1982, marked a pivotal moment in contemporary Yemeni history, signifying the ascendancy of the republic and the establishment of a national consensus under the leadership of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. This date witnessed the transition from narrow loyalties and ideological conflicts to the expansive vision of a state inclusive of all Yemenis. The founding of the General People's Congress was not merely the creation of a ruling party but the genesis of a broad centrist movement and a social contract that unified national visions within the framework of the National Charter. This era fostered a culture where Yemenis could hold differing opinions within the republican structure without undermining its foundations.

However, the current landscape, viewed from the ruins of the occupied capital, Sana'a, and subjugated governorates, is laden with poignant questions about the fate of that grand national dream. The height of institutional achievement has tragically fallen victim to betrayal and the destructive forces of chaos.

Yemen has historically struggled with fragile statehood, susceptible to the whims of rulers. President Saleh's era introduced a paradigm shift, transforming the state from an abstract concept for elites into an institutional reality integrated into the lives of ordinary citizens. This achievement transcended mere development statistics; it laid the groundwork for a culture of law and order, establishing the constitution as the ultimate reference and the parliament as a forum for debate, not armed conflict.

The genius of this period lay in forging a unifying national identity. Tribal members became citizens, soldiers became guardians of the constitution, and intellectuals became partners in decision-making through peaceful transitions and political pluralism unprecedented in the region. The law served as the supreme authority, and order was the lifeline connecting all parts of Yemen to its heart in Sana'a, fostering an environment where stability was a daily reality, not a deferred hope.

This robust structure was devastated by a manufactured earthquake in 2011. Under the guise of change, the gates of chaos were opened, allowing foreign ideologies and the ambitions of those seeking state power without understanding its essence to infiltrate. The architects of this chaos, in their haste to dismantle the system, failed to realize they were removing the very pillars supporting the nation's roof.

The subsequent conspiracies and plots were not aimed solely at Saleh or his party but at the republican idea itself. The military institution fragmented, the sanctity of law eroded, and the nation became prey to quotas and foreign influence. This conspiracy culminated tragically on September 21, 2014, when Sana'a fell to the Houthi sectarian militia, replacing law with coercion, institutions with supervisors, and the citizen's voice with the lament of prisons.

Amidst this bleak scenario, many question whether the republican dream of Yemen has completely collapsed. The answer lies in the silent and overt resistance simmering in the Yemeni street today. The dream and the legacy of August 24th endure, with collective consciousness being its most precious element. The darkness emanating from historical abysses has failed to erase from Yemenis' memory the features of the state they once knew: a state of security, justice, and citizenship. This profound yearning for President Saleh's era is not merely nostalgia but a potent political fuel and an unequivocal rejection of sectarian, lineage-based rule.

The republican dream of Yemen remains alive in the resolve of every free and courageous Yemeni soldier and resistance fighter battling on various fronts. It continues to pulse in the testament of December 2017, written by the martyr President in his blood, when he issued his final republican call for a widespread popular uprising to protect the republican system and reclaim the hijacked state. The dream has not died. Nations that have tasted freedom, order, and law for three decades may bend under the storms of conspiracy, but they do not perish. The August 24th charter remains an indispensable roadmap, constantly reminding the free that the path to Sana'a begins with republican cohesion, transcending petty differences, and drawing upon the spirit of the state to break through the darkness of Houthi rule.

As Yemen navigates one of the most complex periods in its modern history, a renewed debate surrounds the nation's political trajectories since the establishment of the Republic. An enduring conflict has profoundly impacted state institutions and society, transforming Yemen into a battleground for competing political and sectarian agendas.

Political analysts suggest that the shift from unifying national political parties to the rise of Islamist and sectarian groups is key to understanding the transformations that led to Yemen's division and ongoing war. Political competition has devolved from national programs to a struggle over religious and sectarian identity and influence.

The General People's Congress (GPC), founded on August 24, 1982, exemplifies an early political experiment aimed at uniting diverse currents under a national banner during a time of internal strife and regional tensions following decades of political turmoil. The GPC was conceived not as an exclusive ideological party but as a broad, centrist political framework accommodating nationalists, leftists, Islamists, and independents under the "National Charter" to mitigate intellectual and political conflicts that had previously characterized the Yemeni landscape.

Naji Babaker, a writer and politician, told "Khaba" agency that a significant achievement of this experience was fostering a culture of political dialogue and creating a space for competition within institutions rather than confrontation outside them. This approach contributed to a considerable degree of stability for an extended period, contrasting with earlier phases marked by armed conflict between political forces.

The unification of Yemen on May 22, 1990, marked a pivotal moment, with the GPC and the Yemeni Socialist Party agreeing to end the division between North and South Yemen. This transition from political partition to the establishment of a unified state based on political pluralism saw the nation's first multi-party parliamentary elections in the Arabian Peninsula in 1993, along with the establishment of constitutional institutions based on elections and political competition.

However, this burgeoning democratic experiment faced significant challenges in the first decade of unity, exacerbated by escalating foreign interference. Local religious, ideological, and nationalist factions, backed by external powers, attempted to alter the political system's structure. The ruling GPC managed to steer the country away from this precipice, largely due to its adherence to moderation and avoidance of extremism.

In subsequent decades, the influence of political Islamist groups and sectarian-oriented movements grew significantly. Political competition gradually shifted from a contest over programs and visions for state governance to a struggle for religious, social, and political dominance. Naji Babaker, a prominent leader in the Democratic People's Party (Hashed), asserts that these groups weakened the concept of the national state by prioritizing ideological and sectarian loyalties over institutional allegiance. This deepened social and political divisions, the initial sparks of which ignited in 2011 and intensified into the Houthi militia's Iran-backed coup in September 2014, leading to the seizure of the capital, Sana'a, and their subsequent military expansion.

Researchers specializing in Yemeni politics view the current war as more than a military confrontation; it reveals a deeper conflict between two projects: one advocating for a civil state based on pluralism and institutions, and others seeking to impose a political model rooted in religious and sectarian references.

During the decades when the GPC was the dominant political force, Yemen witnessed the implementation of numerous infrastructure projects in roads, education, health, and dams, including the reconstruction of the Marib Dam and the development of the oil and gas sectors following the country's entry into the phase of natural resource production and export. This era also saw efforts to resolve complex regional issues, notably border demarcation with Saudi Arabia and Oman through formal agreements that ended decades-long disputes and contributed to regional stability.

More than four decades after the GPC's founding, Yemen finds itself in a drastically altered political reality. The space for partisan political activity has diminished, supplanted by armed factions and ideological groups that have asserted their presence through military force. Researchers emphasize that restoring stability in Yemen requires re-establishing the concept of the national state and strengthening political pluralism, eschewing exclusionary religious or sectarian agendas. They argue that the continuation of identity-based conflicts will trap the nation in a cycle of war and division.

They further contend that while national political parties, despite their flaws and criticisms, operated on the principle of competition within the state framework, the rise of armed ideological groups has shifted political disagreements from dialogue to conflict, plunging Yemen into one of the gravest humanitarian and political crises of the modern era.

Houthi forces reportedly abducted lawyer Abdulkarim Wardan Al-Jarour, the media and culture official for the Yemeni Lawyers Syndicate in Dhamar and Al-Bayda governorates, on Saturday. He was taken to the security administration prison in Dhamar governorate.

Human rights sources indicated that Al-Jarour's detention stems from his human rights activities and his coverage of violations against prisoners at the Dhamar reformatory. He had reportedly called for an urgent investigation into the conditions of detainees, including an incident that nearly resulted in a prisoner's death, and alleged negligence at the emergency department of Dhamar General Hospital.

The detained lawyer had been pursuing cases related to the living and health conditions of prisoners, advocating for their demands for food and medical care, and documenting abuses against lawyers in areas controlled by Houthi militias, according to sources.

In response, the Yemeni Lawyers Syndicate issued a directive, number (20), dated August 22, 2026. It assigned lawyers Akram Saleh Ahmed Dar'an and Akram Mohammed Hussein Al-Radmani to follow up on the case of Abdulkarim Wardan Al-Jarour's detention at the Dhamar governorate security administration, ascertain the reasons for his arrest, and work towards his swift release.

Al-Jarour's abduction occurs amid escalating restrictions and violations against lawyers and human rights activists in Houthi-controlled territories. Concerns are mounting that arbitrary detention is being used to suppress the documentation of abuses and the exposure of detainee conditions.

Three members of the Houthi militia, including a prominent mobilization supervisor, were killed in inter-factional clashes in Dhamar governorate following disputes over funds collected from residents.

Local sources reported that the Houthi mobilization supervisor for the Mefaa' Ans district, identified as "Abu Mutahhar Al-Du'air," sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred after a heated argument erupted between Al-Du'air and other Houthi elements aboard a military vehicle. The dispute reportedly stemmed from disagreements concerning funds and levies collected from the populace under the pretext of celebrating the Prophet's birthday.

Sources further clarified that one of the assailants, belonging to the Al-Qadi family, directly fired at Al-Du'air, inflicting severe injuries. Al-Du'air was subsequently transferred to intensive care, where he remained for approximately ten days before succumbing to his injuries.

The ensuing exchange of gunfire also resulted in the deaths of two individuals from the Al-Qadi family, bringing the total casualties from the confrontation to three.

Internal conflicts within the Houthi militia leadership and ranks have been escalating, largely attributed to disagreements over financial matters and the imposition of levies on citizens. Mutual accusations of embezzlement of these collected revenues are reportedly rampant.

Houthi militias have abducted several residents, including minors, from a village in the Hamdan district north of Sanaa during a military operation. The detentions occurred following the villagers' efforts to dig a well, which the militias had previously authorized for a fee, only to demand further payments.

Local sources reported that the Houthi administration, through its so-called "Water Resources Authority," initially collected approximately five million Yemeni Rials from the villagers to permit well construction. Subsequently, the militia returned, demanding an equivalent sum, which residents characterized as extortion and repeated taxation.

The sources further indicated that military commanders involved in the campaign stipulated a payment of 200,000 Rials for the withdrawal of their forces and to allow villagers to resume well-digging operations. Concurrently, the Houthi-affiliated security administration in Hamdan deployed over 13 military vehicles to the village, establishing a presence that included female security personnel known as "Zainabiyat."

The operation led to the abduction of several residents, including minors, under the pretext of violating arbitrary digging procedures. This campaign has instilled widespread fear and panic among the villagers, compelling most to flee the area. According to the sources, only women and children remain in the village.

Villagers have appealed to human rights organizations and judicial bodies for urgent intervention to protect them and halt what they described as arbitrary practices. They accused the Houthi security apparatus of weaponizing security for extortion and intimidation rather than safeguarding the populace, highlighting instances of looting, abduction, and the imposition of financial demands under various pretexts.

Established on August 24, 1982, the General People's Congress (GPC) emerged during a pivotal political and historical juncture in Yemen, a nation in need of a broad national framework to encompass its political and social diversity and unite national forces and figures around issues of state, republic, development, and unity. Since its inception, the GPC has transcended the definition of a traditional political organization, becoming an integral part of modern Yemeni state history and a significant actor in the country's political transformations for over four decades. As the 44th anniversary approaches, the GPC's experience appears too extensive to be confined to a party occasion; it represents a sustained political journey intertwined with critical phases of Yemen's history, from state institution-building and the achievement of Yemeni unity to the transition to political pluralism and confronting the challenges and conflicts that have beset the nation in the last decade.

The founding of the GPC was necessitated by the need for a political formula capable of accommodating diverse social and national trends and figures, moving beyond the partisan exclusivity that characterized the Yemeni political landscape at the time. Over the years, the GPC evolved into a widely influential political and organizational force, cultivating a popular base that extended across various governorates and regions. With the advent of Yemeni unification in 1990, the GPC entered a new phase, becoming a key player in the unified Yemeni political equation and engaging in the experiences of pluralism, elections, political alliances, and the inherent conflicts that followed unification.

It is challenging to analyze Yemeni political history over the past four decades without acknowledging the GPC's role in achieving Yemeni unity and consolidating political pluralism. The unity realized on May 22, 1990, marked one of the most significant transformations in modern Yemeni history, paving the way for a pluralistic political system, competitive elections, and expanded political participation. For the GPC, pluralism was not merely a transient political circumstance but became an integral part of its political experience, particularly after Yemen's transition to a more open party and electoral system.

The history of the GPC is inextricably linked to the late founding President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose name has been associated with the party's establishment and leadership from its early days, remaining the most influential figure throughout its political and organizational trajectory. Saleh guided the GPC through highly complex political phases, and his name is connected to major national transformations, including unity, political pluralism, and state institution-building. Following his assassination in December 2017, alongside the GPC's Secretary-General Arif Al-Zouka, the party lost the individual who had been its political and organizational center of gravity for over three decades.

Despite all the transformations the country has undergone, the GPC continues to maintain a notable political, popular, and organizational presence. This is largely attributable to its four-decade-long experience, a broad base of cadres and supporters, and its association with major political milestones in Yemen's history. Furthermore, the GPC was conceived not as an exclusive elite organization but from its outset on a broad participatory foundation, which facilitated its establishment of a presence in various governorates and local communities. Consequently, any assessment of the future of the political process in Yemen that overlooks the GPC or assumes its easy marginalization would present an incomplete view of the Yemeni political and social landscape.

The widespread practice of unannounced presidential decisions in Yemen signifies more than just administrative inefficiency; it exposes deep-seated administrative and political corruption, characterized by a lack of transparency, diminished meritocracy, and the prevalence of favoritism, cronyism, and regionalism in public appointments.

Since the formation of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) in April 2022, concerns have mounted regarding numerous appointments, promotions, and assignments within state institutions that have not been officially published. This opacity leaves the public and oversight bodies with limited information about the nature of these decisions, the individuals involved, and the criteria used for selection.

Reports and circulating information suggest hundreds of decisions have been issued in recent years without official media dissemination, with some unverified estimates indicating that over 90% of presidential decisions remain undisclosed, fostering an environment of ambiguity surrounding decision-making processes.

These undisclosed decisions reportedly encompass promotions and adjustments for military and security personnel, appointments and assignments in government bodies and economic entities, as well as transfers and job rotations across various governorates and areas under government control. In a nation grappling with political and military division and multiple centers of influence, such appointments cannot be viewed as routine administrative actions. Each appointment to a leadership position confers a portion of authority, influence, and public resources, making the concealment of selection criteria a barrier to verifying whether decisions are based on competence and experience or political, personal, and regional allegiances.

The issue becomes particularly critical for military, security, and economic posts, where non-transparent appointments can reshape state institutions based on influence rather than professionalism and merit. While competence, experience, and specialization are fundamental to public service, especially in leadership roles managing public funds and sovereign institutions, the lack of public disclosure for numerous decisions prevents societal evaluation of these criteria. This raises a fundamental question: are officials selected for their qualifications, or for their proximity to power circles?

The absence of information regarding nomination and selection mechanisms, and the lack of stated criteria for evaluating candidates, make answering this question impossible. More alarmingly, this approach cultivates an administrative environment that rewards loyalty over achievement and prioritizes personal and political connections over professional qualifications, directly impacting the performance and service delivery capacity of state institutions.

Beyond favoritism, growing concerns highlight the influence of regional and crony considerations in some appointments, exacerbated by the country's profound political and geographical divisions. The problem lies not in an official's regional affiliation, but in regional ties or personal networks becoming an unstated prerequisite for public office, superseding merit and equal opportunity. This pattern of appointment perpetuates closed networks within state institutions, concentrating positions among a limited circle of associates while marginalizing competent individuals lacking political or social connections within power centers. This approach also poses an additional risk to state institutional unity by transforming public jobs into allocations tied to power bases, deepening feelings of injustice among employees and citizens.

The formation of the PLC in April 2022 was intended as a collective political formula to unite diverse forces and currents under a single leadership for the transitional phase and to counter the Houthi group. However, political partnership entails more than just seat distribution; it should extend to decision-making mechanisms and the governance of state institutions. When decisions regarding senior positions are made without clarity or consensus, the concept of partnership is undermined, reinforcing the perception that collective representation does not necessarily equate to collective decision-making.

As unscrutinized appointments accumulate, administrative ambiguity evolves into a pattern of power management based on influence networks, where access to positions becomes contingent on proximity to decision-making centers rather than expertise and competence. The absence of public scrutiny associated with unannounced decisions significantly weakens a crucial anti-corruption tool. Published decisions can be examined by journalists, analyzed by researchers, reviewed by oversight bodies, and challenged by aggrieved employees through legal channels. Conversely, decisions unknown to the public make accountability for issuing bodies more difficult, relying on leaks and confidential sources rather than accessible official documents.

Excessive secrecy does not necessarily protect state institutions from chaos; instead, it can create an ideal environment for pushing through unscrutinized decisions, including undeserved appointments, promotions lacking professional criteria, or personnel reshuffles based on political and regional considerations. This phenomenon also raises legal questions regarding the procedures for issuing, publishing, and enforcing decisions, particularly those affecting employee rights, public appointments, or governmental restructuring. Furthermore, the lack of a comprehensive official database for decisions issued by the PLC and the Presidency since April 2022 hinders tracking state institutional development and understanding administrative, military, and security changes. Most problematically, the absence of official data opens the door to conflicting leaks and estimates, forcing the public to rely on unofficial sources for decisions that should be part of the state's public record.

In a phone call with his family, Al-Madhouhi stated that during the court session, he requested the appointment of a legal defense team, proposing Houthi leaders Shams al-Din Muhammad Sharaf al-Din and Muhammad Miftah to represent him. He cited Quranic verses in his plea for justice and fairness.

Dr. Al-Madhouhi revealed that he endured harsh detention conditions, including solitary confinement and severe psychological and physical pressure. He asserted that he was coerced into making confessions under duress, and that these confessions are null and void, lacking any legal or factual basis.

Regarding the investigations, Al-Madhouhi explained that authorities accused him of insisting on the continuation of immunization programs and child vaccination campaigns in Yemen. He considers his commitment to these programs to be a result of his professional and ethical duty to safeguard public health and fulfill his entrusted responsibilities.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance in Yemen continue to inflict a devastating toll on civilians, with a recent human rights report indicating at least 11,807 casualties since the conflict began. This makes Yemen one of the world's most perilous environments due to the contamination of war remnants.

The report, titled "The Hidden Killer: A Report on the Spread of Mines and War Remnants in Yemen," by the Makha Center for Strategic Studies, cited data from the Landmine Monitor that documented 4,262 civilian deaths and 7,491 injuries. The center warned that these figures represent a minimum, given the difficulties in accessing vast contaminated areas.

The threat posed by these devices is no longer confined to former combat zones. The report highlighted that mines and explosive remnants have infiltrated residential neighborhoods, rural roads, farms, water sources, and flood channels, exposing civilians to daily danger even after fighting has ceased in many regions. The planting of mines, which the Houthi militia has been accused of since its takeover of Sana'a in 2014, has adopted widespread patterns, targeting vital civilian areas with camouflage and designs that make detection exceedingly difficult, thereby escalating the risks for children, women, farmers, and herders.

The consequences extend beyond immediate casualties, causing widespread permanent disabilities, limb amputations, disrupting agricultural activities, restricting population movement, and delaying the return of thousands of displaced individuals. These effects exacerbate the economic and social burdens in a nation already grappling with one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.

In response, the report detailed the efforts of the Masam Project for Mine Clearance, launched by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre in 2018. By the end of July 2026, the project's 33 field teams had cleared 83.7 million square meters of land and removed 578,226 mines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices. This included 409,726 pieces of unexploded ordnance, 152,285 anti-tank mines, 7,604 anti-personnel mines, and 8,611 improvised explosive devices.

During July alone, the project teams cleared 7,101 pieces of war remnants, averaging nearly 229 items daily, and cleared approximately 1.6 million square meters. Tragically, 32 project workers, including five foreign experts, have lost their lives during clearance operations since the project's inception. Osama Al-Qaseebi, Director General of the Masam Project, noted the significant challenges faced by teams due to the lack of accurate minefield maps, necessitating comprehensive, meter-by-meter surveys and the creation of geo-referenced databases based on field discoveries. He also indicated that mine-laying has concentrated on areas directly impacting civilian life, such as roads, farms, and water sources, and noted instances of mines being re-laid in previously cleared areas following shifts in military control.

The report concluded that the mine problem in Yemen will remain a humanitarian and developmental challenge for decades, with repercussions extending beyond casualties to hindering income sources, impeding reconstruction, and increasing the cost of stabilization in affected areas. The report called for the continuation of mine clearance operations, increased support for field teams, expanded community awareness programs, and enhanced documentation of mine locations and war remnants to reduce further civilian casualties.

The Houthi militia has reportedly arrested one of its senior security officials in Hajjah province, identified as "Abu Ghazzah," on charges of treason. The arrest, carried out by the militia's police intelligence agency, has intensified internal disputes within the Iran-backed group and is seen as a move to consolidate power by one faction.

The apprehension of Abu Ghazzah, who held a sensitive position within the preventative security apparatus, occurred amid rising tensions between Houthi leadership factions. Sources indicate a power struggle is underway, with the faction aligned with the stronghold of Saada province, the base of militia leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, seeking to tighten its grip on security and military decision-making. This effort aims to diminish the influence of leaders from other provinces.

The arrest follows accusations of insufficient loyalty and coordination with leaders not belonging to the inner circle surrounding the group's leadership in Saada. The establishment of a new police intelligence agency, reportedly by Ali Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi, has further fueled suspicions and contributed to the factionalism, as it appears designed to assert dominance amidst distrust among various wings of the militia.

These developments highlight a deepening internal conflict within the Houthi structure. Over recent years, multiple factions have vied for influence in military, security, and economic sectors. The Saada faction is actively working to strengthen its control over critical institutions, while the influence of leaders associated with provincial administration or field operations appears to be waning.

Military and security analysts suggest that frequent arrests within the militia's ranks reflect a pervasive lack of trust among its leadership. Accusations of infiltration, dereliction of duty, or bypassing command structures are reportedly being used by the leadership to reposition power centers and sideline individuals perceived as rivals.

The Houthi militia has recently implemented a series of arrests and purges of its officials and members, described by internal sources as a security restructuring aimed at reinforcing control over its institutions and preventing the emergence of independent power bases. These actions coincide with increasing military and political pressures on the militia, prompting its leadership to tighten security measures in controlled territories and raising concerns about the widening rifts among its competing factions.

Three civilians sustained injuries when a landmine detonated under their vehicle in the Al-Zahir district of Yemen's Al-Bayda governorate on Friday. The incident occurred in the village of Al-Majrish as the individuals were traveling to the neighboring village of Ja'amah.

According to the Rights and Development Monitoring Center, the explosion completely destroyed the civilian car. The injured have been identified as Abdulsalam Ahmed Al-Qar, the car owner and driver, who suffered minor injuries; Ali Hussein Al-Qar, who sustained a fractured leg and shrapnel wounds; and Abdullah Abdulrab Hambaj, who sustained shrapnel and minor wounds.

The monitoring center noted that this is not an isolated incident in the region, stating that its team has previously documented similar occurrences at the same location, resulting in civilian casualties, including children. The center attributed the planting of landmines on civilian routes and near villages to the Houthi militia.

The organization emphasized that the area is distant from active combat zones, asserting that the continued presence of landmines poses a direct threat to the lives of residents and constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.

The Rights and Development Monitoring Center called for an immediate cessation of all types of landmine planting in residential areas and public roads. It also demanded the disclosure of maps detailing planted mines in the Al-Zahir district and Al-Bayda governorate, alongside efforts to clear affected areas to ensure civilian safety.

Furthermore, the center urged United Nations bodies and international human rights organizations to condemn the planting of landmines and to exert pressure for the accountability of those responsible, considering these violations subject to investigation and prosecution under international law.

Intelligence reports indicate significant Houthi military reinforcements have been deployed towards the governorate of Taiz, the city of Mocha, and the western coast, intensifying fears of an escalation in military operations targeting areas near the Bab al-Mandab strait.

According to the "Sheba Intelligence" network, the scale of these recent reinforcements surpasses previous movements towards the western front. The deployment includes personnel and military equipment directed towards axes connected to Taiz and Mocha. These developments suggest a Houthi intent to approach the positions of government forces stationed at the entrances to Bab al-Mandab.

While Sheba Intelligence could not independently verify the commencement of a Houthi ground offensive towards Bab al-Mandab, it noted that the size and direction of the movements make the western coast a critical front requiring close observation amidst the current escalation.

These troop movements follow nearly two weeks of intense Houthi attacks on the city of Mocha and its port, which began on August 9 with coordinated missile and drone strikes. The Yemeni army reported that these attacks resulted in seven deaths and thirty injuries, while government air defenses announced the interception of eleven drones. Commercial and maritime operations at the port were subsequently suspended due to the attacks, with official estimates indicating significant financial losses. This escalation also coincided with attacks impacting maritime navigation in the vicinity of Bab al-Mandab.

Current intelligence suggests the Houthi build-up is part of a pattern of preparations that began in July, when Sheba Intelligence identified indicators pointing to the Taiz-Bab al-Mandab axis as a priority front for any broad military escalation, alongside the Marib-Jawf and Saudi Yemeni border fronts. Previous reports also mentioned Houthi preparations for a naval maneuver on the western coast, simulating the closure of the Bab al-Mandab strait, concurrent with the transfer of missiles and drones to coastal sites south of Hodeidah.

Assessments suggest that swiftly controlling Bab al-Mandab would be a complex operation, requiring the penetration of multiple defense lines and the securing of exposed supply routes towards the coast. Consequently, weakening government forces around Mocha, disrupting the port, and exhausting defensive capabilities are considered potential objectives for the initial phase of any escalation. Mocha holds strategic importance, situated between internal Taiz fronts and the southern gateway to the Red Sea, with its port serving as a vital component of the supply lines and logistical services for government forces deployed along the western coast.

Although there are no confirmed indicators to date of the Houthis establishing effective control over Bab al-Mandab or launching a direct ground assault for its capture, the convergence of ground mobilization with missile and drone attacks and maritime escalation heightens concerns about the militia's attempt to create a multi-layered pressure zone around Mocha and the strait's entrances, potentially paving the way for future military actions towards Bab al-Mandab.

As the 44th anniversary of the founding of the General People's Congress (GPC) approaches on August 24th, it marks a pivotal moment in contemporary Yemeni history, signifying a turning point towards progress and enlightenment. The GPC emerged not from closed rooms or political decree, but from a profound national necessity to serve as the unifying intellect and backbone of a modern state navigating fragmentation and ideological strife.

Prior to 1982, Yemen grappled with deep-seated divisions and narrow loyalties that threatened the aspirations of the September and October revolutions. In this critical juncture, the National Charter emerged as a philosophical bedrock, conceived not by politicians alone, but by the collective will of all Yemeni segments, from the far right to the far left. This charter served, and continues to serve, as a unique social contract, cleansing elite minds of subservience and reshaping collective consciousness around the principle that Yemen's strength lies in the unity of its people under a national identity, rather than in lineage purity, singular party dominance, or group allegiance.

From this intellectual foundation, a monumental reconstruction effort, unparalleled in the modern Arabian Peninsula, was launched. The GPC was not a party of empty slogans or detached theorizing; it was an organization dedicated to the land and its people, a party of construction, agriculture, education, and infrastructure. Under its leadership, the land was reshaped to carve asphalt arteries into the deepest valleys, and water was restored to the Great Marib Dam, symbolizing the enduring nature of civilization. During its tenure, the nation's oil and gas wealth was transformed through strategic development into centers of learning, public universities in every city, and hospitals and health centers that brought medical care to remote villages long neglected.

However, the GPC's most significant achievement remains the orchestration of May 22, 1990 – the day the flag of unity was raised in Aden. This was not merely an administrative merger but the foundation of a new democratic era, where unity was intertwined with political pluralism, freedom of the press, and electoral accountability. The GPC, repeatedly entrusted with a sweeping popular mandate, demonstrated both chivalry and wisdom, eschewing authoritarianism in favor of dialogue, empowering women in leadership roles, and providing opportunities for youth to shape a distinctly Yemeni democracy, admired globally for its rationality and tolerance.

This internal genius was complemented by a prudent foreign policy that kept Yemen detached from regional power blocs, prioritizing reason and good neighborliness. Complex border disputes were resolved through peaceful means and international arbitration, establishing Yemen as a pillar of stability in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf region and a respected voice in international forums.

As this anniversary approaches, it is clear that the General People's Congress was not a transient phase in Yemen's history, but the ultimate expression of the Yemeni character – its moderation, its centrism, and its capacity for construction and renewal. The legacy of this venerable party, embedded in every school, etched in the pillars of every bridge, and ingrained in the consciousness of every citizen who experienced stability and prosperity, remains the true guarantee and fundamental basis for any future national resurgence. While major institutions may face storms, deep roots endure, awaiting the dawn to sprout anew with justice, growth, and peace.

As the 44th anniversary of the General People's Congress (GPC) approaches on August 24, the party is reflecting on a pivotal era in modern Yemeni political history. Founded on August 24, 1982, under the leadership of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the GPC emerged as a comprehensive political framework designed to unify diverse social and political forces under a national project grounded in the principles of the National Charter, state-building, and the reinforcement of the republican system.

Over more than four decades, the GPC has been intertwined with critical junctures in Yemen's history, from establishing state institutions and expanding development projects to achieving Yemeni unification on May 22, 1990. During its leadership, the party oversaw significant projects in education, health, infrastructure, telecommunications, ports, and airports, alongside the transition to a multi-party system and the conduct of elections, solidifying the ballot box as a mechanism for political participation and power transfer.

Beyond its role as a ruling party, the GPC evolved into a broad political and social umbrella, encompassing various figures and factions by leveraging the flexibility and centrism of the National Charter. The party navigated a long political journey marked by numerous crises, most notably the events of 2011 and the subsequent political settlement leading to a power transition in February 2012. The situation grew more complex with the Houthi militia's takeover of state institutions in September 2014.

Currently, the GPC faces multifaceted challenges, including restoring its organizational unity, consolidating decision-making centers, reforming its leadership structure, and rebuilding its popular base. It must also develop a political discourse that aligns with contemporary changes and dynamics. Crucially, the party needs to re-evaluate organizational and political practices that weakened the bond between its leadership and grassroots, such as the assumption of guaranteed loyalty and the need for balanced attention to its cadres and members, rather than co-opting individuals from other political entities at the expense of loyalists.

In this context, the GPC's base is looking towards Ambassador Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, the party's Vice Chairman, as a figure capable of contributing to the GPC's reorganization and cohesion. Expectations for his political role have heightened following the lifting of UN sanctions against him, with hopes that his presence will unify ranks, reactivate party institutions, enhance engagement with national forces, and foster broader regional and international political channels to serve the national cause and restore state institutions.

The aspirations linked to Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh extend beyond the GPC's organizational aspects to potentially shaping a wider political role for the party. Yemen requires forces capable of building consensus and opening avenues for dialogue and national reconciliation. This necessitates the GPC's re-establishment as a civilian political organization committed to pluralism, peaceful power transfer, state-building, equal citizenship, and the unity and integrity of Yemeni institutions, drawing on its historical experience while avoiding past mistakes.

On its 44th anniversary, the GPC stands at a critical political juncture. Preserving its legacy now depends on building a new future for the party and for Yemen. While its base anticipates a more active role for Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh in reunification and resurgence, the GPC's capacity to overcome divisions, renew its leadership, empower its youth, heed its loyal base, and engage with national forces will determine its future position. In a nation ravaged by war and division, the revitalization of political parties, particularly the GPC, could be a crucial step towards decisive action and the restoration of the state.

As the 44th anniversary of its founding approaches on August 24, the General People's Congress (GPC) is reflecting on its significant role in modern Yemeni political history. Established on August 24, 1982, under the leadership of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the GPC was conceived as an inclusive political framework born from complex national circumstances, aiming to unite diverse social and political forces under a national project grounded in the principles of the National Charter, state-building, and the reinforcement of the republican system.

Over more than four decades, the GPC has been intertwined with pivotal moments in Yemen's trajectory, from the construction of state institutions and the expansion of development projects to the achievement of Yemeni unification on May 22, 1990. During its leadership of the state, the party oversaw extensive projects in education, health, infrastructure, communications, and ports, alongside the transition to multi-party politics and the implementation of elections, establishing the ballot box as a key mechanism for political participation and power transition.

More than just a ruling party, the GPC, due to its broad composition, evolved into a political and social umbrella encompassing various figures and currents. It navigated a long political journey marked by numerous crises, notably the events of 2011 and the subsequent political settlement that led to a power transfer in February 2012. The nation then entered a more complicated phase with the Houthi militia's coup and seizure of state institutions in September 2014.

Today, the GPC faces multifaceted challenges, including the restoration of its organizational unity, consolidation of decision-making centers, renewal of its leadership, and rebuilding its popular base. It must also develop a political discourse responsive to the current phase's dynamics and demands. Critical re-evaluation of past organizational and political practices that weakened the relationship between leadership and party ranks is also necessary. This includes addressing the mentality of assumed perpetual loyalty and ensuring balanced attention to loyal cadres and members, rather than prioritizing figures from other political factions at the expense of those who remained steadfast.

The GPC needs to revalidate its organizational base, appreciate its loyal cadres and supporters, and actively involve them in decision-making. Infusing new energy into its structures, empowering qualified youth, and revitalizing its core membership are crucial for internal renewal and regaining competitive political capacity, while preserving its national legacy and popular support. Overcoming divisions necessitates a critical review of past experiences.

In this context, many GPC members look to Ambassador Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, the party's Vice Chairman, as a figure capable of contributing to reorganizing the party and restoring its cohesion. Expectations of his political role have heightened following the lifting of UN sanctions against him. Hopes are pinned on his presence to unify ranks, reactivate party institutions, enhance communication with national forces, and open broader regional and international political channels to serve the national cause and restore state institutions.

The aspirations linked to Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh extend beyond the GPC's organizational aspect to envisioning a broader political role for the party in the upcoming phase, given Yemen's need for forces capable of building consensus and initiating dialogue and national reconciliation. This places a responsibility on the GPC to re-present itself as a civilian political organization committed to pluralism, peaceful power transfer, and a project centered on the state, equal citizenship, and Yemen's unity and institutional integrity, leveraging its historical experience while avoiding past mistakes.

On its 44th anniversary, the GPC stands at a critical political juncture. Preserving its legacy is less about recapturing the past and more about constructing a new future for the party and for Yemen. While its base anticipates a more effective role for Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh in reunification and regaining influence, the party's ability to overcome divisions, renew its leadership, empower its youth, heed its loyal members, and engage with national forces will be decisive factors in its future standing. In a nation exhausted by war and division, the revitalization of political parties, particularly the GPC, could serve as a vital pathway toward a decisive push to restore the state.

Dr. Abdulqader Al-Kharraz has revealed evidence suggesting the Houthi militia procured two aircraft, registering them under international organizations and utilizing them for military purposes under the guise of humanitarian aid. This operation allegedly involved transporting sensitive equipment and experts to support the group's security and military activities.

Al-Kharraz stated that his team spent a full year monitoring air traffic in and out of Sana'a International Airport, gathering documentation on the movement of experts, military equipment, and communication and espionage technologies. He indicated that certain flights, ostensibly for humanitarian and UN purposes, were exploited to benefit the Houthi militia, according to their monitoring findings.

He further referenced US sanctions imposed in January 2026 on Adel Mutahar Abdullah Al-Muayyad, which included accusations of involvement in efforts to supply aircraft to the Houthi militia through aviation companies "Brash Aviation" and "Samaa Aviation." Al-Kharraz emphasized the importance of distinguishing between two individuals named Adel Al-Muayyad, noting that name similarities can complicate tracking efforts.

Al-Kharraz detailed the case of three Colombian experts specializing in communications, whose transfer to Sana'a was requested by the company "Vega Soft," reportedly owned by Adel Yahya Yahya Al-Muayyad. These experts were allegedly transported to Sana'a on UN flights prior to US strikes on Sana'a airport in May 2025. The documents indicated a request for their transport on a UN envoy's aircraft, suggesting their significance to the Houthis and the coordination involved with UN flights.

Following the suspension of UN flights to Sana'a after the US strikes, the team's information suggests an alternative route was sought for transporting the experts overland to Aden, with the intention of them traveling from Aden Airport using identification cards belonging to UN personnel. This operation reportedly ended with the apprehension of the three experts at Aden Airport. Al-Kharraz questioned the current detention status of the Colombian experts and called for investigations into any exploitation of humanitarian organizations and flights for military or security purposes benefiting the Houthi militia.

Connecting this incident to what he described as a "Colombian experience," Al-Kharraz noted the emergence of individuals linked to research centers and organizations visiting Colombia in mid-2025. He raised questions about potential links between these movements and the network of experts his team claims to have identified, stating this aspect will be part of an upcoming detailed report on the Houthi security and intelligence apparatus. The report is expected to cover information on the installation of communication systems, training of Houthi leaders, and the participation of experts in training operations.

Al-Kharraz also indicated that evasion tactics extend beyond name similarities, involving the use of companies and owner names to complicate network tracking. He pointed to other companies linked to the Al-Muayyad family involved in transporting military manufacturing-related equipment via sea, including "Jainik," allegedly owned by Fares Al-Muayyad and Ghassan Al-Hadi, in connection with previously reported seizures of containers at the port of Aden.

In a related development, Al-Kharraz reported that five cargo planes arrived at Sana'a International Airport on Wednesday, with his team's information suggesting one aircraft carried an Omani and an Iranian official. This aircraft reportedly departed later carrying the remains of Iranian fatalities and injured individuals, along with several injured Houthi fighters. Al-Kharraz affirmed his team's continued monitoring of air traffic at Sana'a airport, emphasizing the necessity of investigating and holding accountable any misuse of humanitarian or UN flights for military or security purposes, and preventing the exploitation of humanitarian cover to support Houthi activities.

The Yemeni Armed Forces announced on Thursday the execution of 81 military operations against the Houthi group within the past 24 hours. These operations targeted Houthi sites, personnel, vehicles, and sources of threat across various fronts.

The official spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Colonel Rakan Majid Abdullah Al-Nazeeli, stated in a release on Thursday, August 20, 2026, that the operations were conducted along the lines of contact. According to the statement, these actions resulted in the neutralization of several field commanders and operatives, as well as the destruction of Houthi equipment, vehicles, and threat sources.

Al-Nazeeli explained that the operations are part of retaliatory measures against what he described as repeated Houthi aggressions targeting civilian assets and the resources of the Yemeni people. He accused the group of exacerbating civilian suffering by targeting vital facilities and halting oil exports via the port of Al-Dabbah, which he stated has led to a cessation of revenue crucial for government employee salaries.

The military spokesperson further accused the Houthi militia of engaging in regional conflicts and implementing foreign agendas, which he believes has damaged several vital facilities, including Sana'a International Airport and Red Sea ports. He also alleged that the group has rejected initiatives for air travel to and from Sana'a Airport and has contributed to the damage of the ports of Hodeidah, As-Salif, and Ras Isa.

He added that the Houthis' continued targeting of civilian areas, including the port of Mokha and the Al-Aradi anchorage in Bab el-Mandeb, as well as their attacks on ships carrying foodstuffs and residential areas and displaced persons' camps in Marib, represent a continuation of their policy to besiege and starve Yemenis.

In contrast, Al-Nazeeli noted that the Yemeni government has issued over 350 permits for commercial vessels to enter the ports of Hodeidah, As-Salif, and Ras Isa since the beginning of 2026, emphasizing the government's commitment to alleviating the suffering of the population.

The official spokesperson affirmed that the Yemeni Armed Forces remain committed to their duties of defending the nation's security and sovereignty and protecting its citizens. He highlighted that the operations conducted in recent days reflect an advancement in the forces' capability to execute simultaneous and coordinated operations across multiple units and fronts. He stated that these operations have, according to the Armed Forces' assessment, disrupted the Houthis and impaired their decision-making capacity, reiterating the state's ongoing efforts to restore its institutions, assert control over Yemeni territories, and end the suffering of its citizens.

As August 24 approaches, political and popular circles in Yemen are preparing to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the General People's Congress (GPC). Established in 1982, this national occasion marked a strategic turning point in the trajectory of the modern Yemeni state. The emergence of this pioneering organization heralded a new era, transitioning the country from a landscape of conflict and clandestine activities to one of construction, development, stability, and the establishment of modern state institutions based on consensus, moderation, and the rejection of exclusion and extremism.

The establishment of the GPC arose from an urgent national need to end intellectual fragmentation. The party succeeded in formulating the "National Charter," a theoretical and intellectual guide rooted in Yemen's soil and societal identity. It distinguished itself through its exceptional ability to encompass all political and intellectual currents under a single national umbrella, bringing an end to years of turmoil and presenting a brilliant model for political and social harmony. This approach established comprehensive dialogue as the sole civilized means for managing public affairs and shaping national decisions.

The ambitions of the GPC extended beyond political stability, translating vision into action by initiating the most extensive development drive in modern Yemeni history. This comprehensive renaissance touched every part of the nation, manifesting in the completion of colossal strategic projects, foremost among them sustainable development initiatives. This included unlocking the nation's latent wealth in oil and gas and utilizing the revenues to modernize infrastructure, constructing an extensive network of roads, bridges, and airports that connected cities and rural areas, thereby facilitating trade. Concurrently, there was a significant leap in educational outreach, with the establishment of public universities and technical institutes, and the construction of hospitals even in the most remote villages and regions.

The most prominent and enduring achievement in the GPC's record remains its wise and historic leadership in achieving the blessed Yemeni unification on May 22, 1990. The party's role was not confined to the peaceful and institutional integration of the two parts of the country; it coupled this great accomplishment with the consolidation of democratic principles and political pluralism. It became a pioneer of the democratic experience by organizing and overseeing a series of free and fair elections, repeatedly earning the trust of the people through its pragmatic programs, while also creating broad opportunities for the empowerment of youth and women in senior decision-making positions.

This internal wisdom was clearly reflected in both the military and diplomatic spheres. The party placed significant emphasis on building professional armed forces and security services to protect national sovereignty and maintain public order. Externally, it crafted a balanced and rational diplomatic policy based on the principles of good neighborliness and the peaceful resolution of border disputes through arbitration, transforming Yemen into a pivotal element of stability and a trusted partner in the region and the world.

This renewed commemoration clearly affirms that the General People's Congress was not merely a ruling party but has been and remains the backbone of the Yemeni state and the guarantor of its stability. Its name is etched in the public consciousness with the most prosperous and secure eras. This pioneering experience continues to serve as an inspiring national school, demonstrating that moderate political vision and dedicated leadership are always capable of orchestrating major historical transformations, safeguarding national dignity, and advancing the nation toward a bright future.

The move comes in response to escalating regional developments and their impact on international security and stability.

Afra Al Hameli, Director of the Strategic Communications Department at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Abu Dhabi has halted all commercial and financial activities and dealings with Tehran "until further notice." She simultaneously denied what she described as "claims" regarding the nature of the economic relationship between the two countries.

Al Hameli reaffirmed the UAE's continued commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and regional integration as fundamental pillars for supporting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

She added that the decision to halt dealings was made "in light of the regional escalation that has undermined regional and international peace and security," emphasizing that the UAE continues to work towards protecting the integrity of the international financial system and adhering to international laws and accepted global standards.

This decision comes amidst rising regional tensions and increasing international measures aimed at curbing financial flows and economic activities linked to parties involved in regional security crises.

The forces stated in a released communiqué that the operation encompassed the Harib, Ain, Bayhan, and Upper Markha fronts. It was carried out by their drone aviation units, which launched multiple airstrikes targeting military sites and objectives in areas under Houthi militia control.

According to the statement, the strikes successfully hit their intended targets, resulting in significant human and material losses among the Houthi militia ranks, including personnel and military vehicles.

This operation followed the martyrdom of soldier Saleh Abdullah Saleh Bri'amah, a member of the Sixth Brigade of the Shabwa Defense Forces, who was killed when a drone targeted a military position.

These developments occur amidst ongoing military tensions along several fronts in and around Shabwa, where areas bordering Houthi-controlled territories experience intermittent clashes and reciprocal attacks.

Staff at Mokha Port in Yemen's Taiz governorate held a protest Tuesday against repeated Houthi attacks that have disrupted maritime and commercial activity, threatening the livelihoods of thousands.

The demonstration, involving port employees, shipping and unloading workers, and maritime agents, condemned the Houthi assaults on the port and civilian facilities. Protesters called for urgent international intervention to protect ports and civilian infrastructure, and to ensure the safety of maritime navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab strait. They warned of the severe economic and humanitarian consequences of continued targeting of vital installations.

Dr. Abdulmalik Al-Sharabi, Director of Mokha Port, stated that the port is a civilian facility serving all Yemenis, employing over 1,300 individuals across various departments. He confirmed that recent attacks have rendered the port inoperable, halting all maritime traffic.

Al-Sharabi elaborated that the repercussions of the halted operations extend beyond port staff to encompass the shipping, unloading, transportation, and related commercial sectors. This has resulted in thousands of workers losing their jobs and income.

The protesters emphasized that the targeting of Mokha Port affects not only an economic entity but also a civilian facility crucial to the interests of thousands of families, exacerbating the economic hardships in a city already grappling with the war's impact and declining trade.

Participants cautioned that persistent Houthi attacks on ports and civilian facilities risk escalating damage to trade, supply chains, and economic sectors dependent on the stability of maritime routes. They also highlighted the potential impact on local and regional security and international navigation safety.

The demonstrators reaffirmed their rejection of attacks on civilian and economic infrastructure. They urged for a firmer international stance to protect civilians and vital facilities, secure navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, and prevent these maritime corridors from becoming zones of open escalation.

The Houthi militia is reportedly facing a severe recruitment crisis and unprecedented human losses on the battlefield, compelling them to resort to controversial measures by releasing hundreds of convicted criminals and individuals with prior offenses from prisons. These individuals are allegedly being coerced into signing agreements to join the frontlines.

This forced recruitment drive from behind bars appears to be a direct consequence of the significant battlefield casualties the militia has sustained recently. According to identical military and medical sources in the Houthi-controlled capital, Sana'a, over 200 Houthi fighters were killed within a mere 48-hour period in mid-August 2026. The majority of these fatalities reportedly occurred during intense clashes and targeted drone strikes by government forces in the Taiz fronts, particularly in Al-Burah, and along the West Coast.

These substantial losses, coupled with the continuous flow of bodies to hospitals in Sana'a and Dhamar, have placed the Houthi militia in a difficult position, facing a severe manpower shortage, especially within their so-called Al-Sammad Brigade and elite forces. Leaked statistics and data from Houthi committees overseeing prisons indicate intensive field operations by the militia's judicial and security leadership. Recent figures for releases linked to mandatory conscription include the release of 850 prisoners and detainees from prisons in the Sa'ada, Hajjah, and Sana'a governorates.

Furthermore, the militia is reportedly finalizing the release of approximately 1,200 to 1,400 additional inmates from the central correctional facility in Dhamar for the same purpose. Additionally, swift releases of 756 individuals, including prisoners from Dhamar, Ibb, Hajjah, and Sa'ada governorates, have been documented. These individuals were reportedly transferred directly to closed training camps immediately after their release.

The scope of these releases extends beyond minor offenses or insolvent prisoners. Reports indicate that individuals convicted of serious criminal offenses, including murder, banditry, and drug trafficking, are also being freed. The recruitment mechanism reportedly involves a direct trade-off: bearing arms and fighting in exchange for the dismissal of their cases, legal status adjustments, or the settlement of public and private claims. To lend a semblance of legitimacy, the Houthi militia is allegedly framing these actions under the guise of prison reform committees, acting on direct orders from militia leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, and capitalizing on the occasion of the Prophet's birthday to justify pardons for drug traffickers and murderers, deploying them as expendable assets in their conflict.

Yemeni political and military sources assert that the Houthi reliance on criminals and prisoners underscores a significant failure in their general mobilization campaigns among tribal communities. The Yemeni National Defense Council has commended the growing awareness among tribal members and social figures who have unequivocally rejected Houthi calls for mobilization, warning elders and sheikhs against allowing their sons to become fuel for Houthi marches and death traps. This new development places Yemeni prisons in Houthi-controlled areas at serious risk, as the militia is reportedly releasing dangerous criminal elements back into society and onto the frontlines, while simultaneously continuing to abduct and detain hundreds of civilians, activists, journalists, and UN personnel without any apparent negotiation or humanitarian release.

Two rare ancient statues, believed to originate from ancient Yemen, remain under judicial detention in Switzerland as a legal case initiated in 2016 continues its proceedings, with judicial procedures extending until 2026.

According to Swiss court documents, the statues, identified by numbers ST.FIG.047 and ST.FIG.048, depict a male and a female figure in an offering posture, respectively. They are dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. An expert report prepared in 2022 confirmed the female statue as authentic and unique, describing it as an irreplaceable historical artifact of its era. Significant similarities between the two pieces suggest they originate from the same archaeological context.

The case stems from Swiss customs investigations that began in 2016 and 2017, involving thousands of items stored in warehouses in Geneva. In 2023, authorities reopened the case concerning the statues after an attempt was made to remove the female statue from the free zone, leading to a confiscation order by the public prosecutor's office. Although the Geneva cantonal court dismissed the case in November 2024 on procedural grounds, the Court of Justice overturned this decision in June 2025, maintaining the statues' detention. An appeal was subsequently lodged with the Swiss Federal Court in July of the same year.

Independent researcher Abdullah Mohsen, who monitors Yemeni antiquities, noted that published judicial rulings do not indicate the presence of any legal representation for the Republic of Yemen, nor any legal memorandum or expert report submitted by a Yemeni entity in this case. He urged the Yemeni embassy and relevant authorities to clarify whether any unannounced legal or diplomatic actions have been undertaken.

Mohsen explained that Yemen's absence from the lawsuit's parties does not necessarily imply a lack of undisclosed communications but raises questions about the level of engagement by Yemeni authorities in tracking the fate of these two artifacts. This situation arises amid growing concerns over the smuggling of Yemeni antiquities abroad, with other Swiss documents revealing previously seized Yemeni artifacts in Geneva.

The final disposition of the statues awaits the conclusion of the judicial process. There are calls for the relevant Yemeni authorities to take proactive steps to protect antiquities attributed to the country and to pursue their repatriation should their illicit export from Yemen be confirmed.

Saudi authorities and official bodies within the Kingdom have not yet confirmed the alleged attack or any damage to the refinery. No official statement has been released regarding the extent of any potential damage or losses resulting from the Houthi claims.

This claim follows similar assertions made by the Houthi militia days earlier, alleging a drone attack on the same Jazan refinery on August 13. At that time, Saudi authorities had reported extinguishing a fire at one of the refinery's facilities, confirming that no casualties were recorded.

Independent verification of the new alleged attack or the extent of damage to the facility remains unavailable. The Houthi militia continues to announce military operations targeting Saudi territories and installations.

Hospitals in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, have reportedly refused to accept the bodies of civilians in their morgues over the past few days, as the facilities have become filled with the corpses of Houthi fighters and leaders killed on the front lines.

Local and medical sources informed Akhbar Agency that the refusals have extended to victims of traffic accidents and those who died within the hospitals. This situation has caused distress among the families of the deceased, who are struggling to find places to preserve the bodies of their relatives pending burial arrangements.

Medical sources indicated that supervisory committees affiliated with the Houthi militia have informed the administrations of several hospitals that they cannot accommodate new civilian bodies due to the mogue's capacity being reached by casualties from combat zones.

The sources added that the strain on the morgues has intensified concurrently with a resurgence of fighting in various conflict areas, including Marib, Taiz, Dhale, the West Coast, and Shabwa. These measures have sparked public discontent, particularly as hospital morgues are typically used for the temporary storage of deceased individuals until their transfer and burial can be completed.

The Houthi militia, which controls Sanaa, has refrained from disclosing its casualty figures, despite near-daily funerals for dozens of its fighters, in an apparent attempt to alleviate pressure on the morgue facilities.

Nine individuals, including several first responders, have died in a catastrophic collision that occurred in the Harf Sufyan district of Amran governorate, a region under Houthi control. The incident followed an armed dispute between two cousins.

Local sources reported that a dispute erupted between Naji Shilh and his cousin, Munaa Shilh. The disagreement escalated to an exchange of gunfire, resulting in injuries to both men. Subsequently, several members of the Al-Harshan family, identified as Adnan Ali Harshan and Hashem Hameed Harshan, along with Mohammed Shilh, brother of the injured Munaa Shilh, and Ahmed Yahya Shilh, rushed to provide aid to the wounded.

The sources further explained that as the first responders were en route to transport the injured, a violent collision took place in the Al-Murabaa area, north of Harf Sufyan city. Their vehicle collided with a car carrying Saddam Hussein Fareh and his cousin, Taha Qayed Mohammed Fareh. The impact caused both vehicles to erupt in flames, resulting in the complete incineration of all occupants.

According to the sources, the collision claimed the lives of everyone in both vehicles. An additional fatality, Nabil Shaddad from Bani Shaddad, brought the total death toll to nine individuals. The deceased have been identified as Naji Shilh, Munaa Shilh, Mohammed Shilh, Ahmed Yahya Shilh, Adnan Ali Harshan, Hashem Hameed Harshan, Saddam Hussein Fareh, Taha Qayed Mohammed Fareh, and Nabil Shaddad.

This tragic event occurs amidst a notable increase in road accident fatalities across Yemen. The deteriorating condition of roads and the absence of traffic safety measures are exacerbating human and material losses at an unprecedented rate.

The city of Mokha, situated on the Red Sea coast, stands as a vital link for Yemen, connecting a rich history with an unwavering future. Currently, this historic city and its people are enduring a fierce conflict, with joint forces and the National Resistance engaged in a significant battle against the Houthi militia. This struggle highlights a true national epic, where valiant fighters defend the Republic and its enduring identity against the Houthi's persistent targeting of vital infrastructure, ports, and residential areas with ballistic missiles and explosive drones.

The systematic targeting of Mokha and its historic port is not merely a military assault; it represents a desperate attempt to cripple the economic and humanitarian lifeline of the West Coast and to defy all aspirations for stability. In the face of this Houthi aggression, the fronts in Al-Buraah, Hays, and Al-Waz'iyah stand firm like immovable rocks against the illusions of theocratic rule. Here, the heroes of the National Resistance, supported by the tribal and popular solidarity of the West Coast's inhabitants, are achieving exceptional feats, delivering harsh lessons to the militia on the fields of honor and effectively thwarting infiltration attempts with high combat efficiency and self-defense capabilities that have shattered the mirages of drone and missile attacks.

However, this legendary valor on the ground raises pressing and legitimate questions about the nature of the political and military management of the conflict. The Presidential Leadership Council and the legitimate government appear to be managing the crisis from a distance, relying excessively on diplomatic statements and United Nations complaints that have failed to provide sustenance or security. The continued adherence to a passive defense strategy, and the reluctance to make a decisive move toward coordinated, large-scale preemptive strikes to eradicate the Houthi missile and drone systems at their source, grants the militia a free opportunity to reposition and enhance its offensive capabilities, trapping the joint forces in a defensive posture rather than an offensive one.

Similarly, the regional and international stance appears weak, trapped in a policy of soft containment and conflict management rather than resolution. The reliance on pale condemnatory statements and verbal warnings that dissipate with the first Houthi shell reflects a complete disconnect from reality and an inability to comprehend the nature of this dynastic militia, which understands only destruction. The absence of genuine international will to cut off supply lines and destroy the militia's military and qualitative capabilities puts the credibility of the international community to the test, rendering international maritime protection conventions mere ink on paper, which only encourages the aggressor to persist in their arrogance.

Today, Mokha, through the resilience of its people, the valor of its fighters, and the wisdom of its leaders on the ground, proves to the world that it is the unyielding guardian of the Red Sea gateway. Yet, this steadfastness should not serve as a cover for political inaction or a justification for international apathy. The battle will not be decided in faltering diplomatic corridors but will be forged by the hands of the free, who understand the language of decisive deterrence and recognize that the dust of the trenches tells truer stories than the speeches delivered in hotels.

The Yemeni Bar Association in Hodeidah Governorate has strongly denounced an incident where one of its members was subjected to humiliation and barred from practicing his profession within the courtroom of the Bayt al-Faqih Primary Court by its president.

This condemnation was issued in a statement released by the association on Sunday, following the receipt of an official report and a complaint filed by lawyer Ahmed Mohammed Radman Al-Alawi. According to the complaint, the court president, Judge Hashem Mohammed Ali Al-Falahi, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, verbally insulted lawyer Al-Alawi, raised his voice at him, and expelled him from the courtroom without any legal justification or cause. This occurred while Al-Alawi was performing his professional duties in a case related to an enforcement dispute pending before the aforementioned judge.

The association affirmed in its statement its categorical rejection of all practices that undermine the rights of lawyers, hinder their ability to fulfill their legal duties in defending their clients, or compromise the dignity and independence of the legal profession.

It stressed that respecting lawyers during the performance of their professional mission is an integral part of respecting justice and consolidating the rule of law. The association emphasized that the complementary relationship between the pillars of justice—the judiciary and the legal profession—must be based on mutual respect, free from any practices that compromise the guarantees of a fair trial or affect the proper conduct of legal proceedings.

The Bar Association called upon the competent authorities to launch an urgent and transparent investigation into the incident. It requested that the complainant's testimony be heard, and that they be enabled to present their evidence and arguments. Additionally, the testimonies of witnesses present and the official report of the incident should be reviewed to determine legal responsibility and take necessary actions against those responsible.

The association concluded its statement by asserting that it will not tolerate any compromise in defending the dignity and professional rights of its members, as guaranteed by the constitution and law. This commitment aims to protect the independence of the legal profession, preserve the prestige and esteemed position of the judiciary, and safeguard the mission of justice from any detrimental practices.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has overseen the deployment of missiles, naval weapons, and drone launch platforms in Houthi-controlled areas overlooking the Red Sea, as part of Iranian preparations to expand regional escalation.

According to the newspaper, officials stated that Yemeni elements provided intelligence and lists of potential targets for attacks, including ports and energy facilities in Saudi Arabia. They also offered advice on measures to defend against potential Saudi responses.

The report, based on intelligence sources and intercepted communications, indicated that the IRGC dispatched commanders to Houthi-controlled regions in Yemen to participate in planning for escalating confrontation with Saudi Arabia, in coordination with Iran-backed Iraqi militias.

Informed officials revealed that the IRGC exploited the period of calm established by a memorandum of understanding to reorganize and coordinate the movements of Iran's allied armed groups in the region, in preparation for intensifying attacks when necessary.

Sources also noted the dispatch of Iranian advisors to Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon to discuss escalation plans and enhance coordination among Tehran-backed armed groups.

This information coincides with the Houthi militia's escalation of attacks in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb strait, including missile and drone launches targeting commercial vessels and coastal facilities. There are indications of increased coordination between Iran and its allied armed groups in the region.

Previous reports had suggested the arrival of IRGC commanders and advisors, along with missile and drone-related equipment, in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen amid ongoing regional tensions and widening confrontations.
