The Central Bank of Yemen officially launched its Unified Default Registry on Wednesday, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the stability of the banking sector and mitigating credit risks by establishing a centralized platform for information exchange on defaulting clients among financial institutions operating in the country.

Central Bank Governor Ahmed Ahmed Ghalib stated during the launch ceremony that the new system represents a crucial project for developing the credit information infrastructure, thereby improving risk management and banking supervision. This, he explained, will contribute to strengthening financial stability and increasing confidence in the banking system.

Ghalib further elaborated that the system is not merely a technical tool for data exchange but a foundational institutional step designed to enhance the quality of credit decisions and refine banking oversight mechanisms, aligning with modern banking standards and practices. He emphasized that access to accurate and up-to-date credit information is vital for reducing defaults and preventing double financing, enabling banks to assess risks more effectively and, consequently, safeguarding depositors' funds and reinforcing the resilience of financial institutions.

The governor noted that the Central Bank designed the system to serve as a unified national platform for collecting, managing, and sharing credit default data among banks. This process adheres to regulatory controls that ensure the accuracy and confidentiality of information, supporting data integration among banking institutions.

He asserted that the project is anticipated to foster credit discipline, embed principles of governance and transparency, and reduce credit risks. Ultimately, it aims to cultivate a more efficient and attractive banking environment for economic and investment activities.

The launch ceremony included a demonstration of the system's operational mechanisms, information security procedures, and usage protocols for banking institutions. Attendees included Mansour Rageh, Undersecretary for Banking Supervision, and representatives from commercial and Islamic banks operating in Yemen.
