Saudi Arabia Hosts Inaugural Maritime Defense Alliance Meeting

Saudi Arabia hosted the inaugural meeting of a new maritime defense alliance aimed at bolstering security and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The gathering, held on Thursday, brought together representatives from Saudi Arabia, the United States, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Morocco, Sudan, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. The participants discussed mechanisms for joint coordination and enhancing cooperation to counter threats to maritime security.

This meeting occurs amidst escalating regional tensions, following attacks by Houthi militias on vessels and maritime installations. The Houthi declaration of a "naval blockade" on Saudi ports has raised international concerns regarding the safety of trade routes and energy supplies transiting the vital Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The alliance's objective is to unify the efforts of participating nations in enhancing the protection of maritime corridors. This initiative seeks to ensure the continued flow of international trade and elevate security coordination to confront threats targeting navigation in one of the world's most critical waterways.
