Local authorities in Hadhramaut Governorate have suspended gold exploration and mining activities in the "Qadiyah" area of the Burum Mayfa'a district following escalating tribal disputes among prospectors, which resulted in one fatality. The decision to halt mining operations comes amid a widespread increase in haphazard exploration for gold and metallic minerals. This phenomenon has notably surged recently after the discovery of sites believed to be rich in minerals, leading to competition over exploration locations and creating security and social tensions in the region. During a meeting in Mukalla city with the "Reconciliation" committee, field developments and efforts to contain the tension and the repercussions of the killing incident linked to the dispute over mining sites were reviewed. By halting exploration activities, authorities aim to de-escalate tensions and restore stability to the area. Concurrently, calls are increasing to regulate the mining sector and curb random exploration to prevent the recurrence of conflicts and preserve societal security and peace. |
