Aden Residents Demand Urgent Action on Mounting Garbage Crisis

Residents of Al-Shuhada neighborhood (Block 12) in Al-Mamdarah, Sheikh Othman district of Aden, have issued an urgent appeal to local authorities to intervene and remove accumulated garbage piles situated in front of a mosque.

Several residents stated that the waste has been accumulating for an extended period despite repeated reports and appeals to the relevant authorities. They emphasized that the issue has not seen any effective resolution, leading to an exacerbation of the residents' suffering.

They added that the continuous accumulation of waste, particularly in front of the mosque and within the residential area, is causing foul odors and creating a conducive environment for the proliferation of flies, mosquitoes, and rodents. This poses a threat to public health, increasing the risks of infectious diseases and epidemics, especially with rising summer temperatures.

The residents also pointed out that the garbage piles have become a haven for stray dogs, raising further concerns for the safety of pedestrians and children, in addition to marring the neighborhood's appearance and negatively impacting the local environment.

The residents have called upon the Director General of Sheikh Othman district and the head of the sanitation department to expedite the removal of the waste and implement a regular weekly waste collection program to prevent prolonged accumulation.

The residents asserted that the provision of public sanitation services is one of the most basic duties incumbent upon local authorities, urging for sustainable measures to mitigate environmental pollution, protect public health, and improve service levels in residential areas.
