UN Continues Building 770 Shelter Units for Displaced Persons in Marib

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is actively engaged in constructing 770 temporary shelter units for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Marib Governorate, northeastern Yemen, aiming to improve living conditions and protection for the most vulnerable families.

The agency announced its ongoing shelter projects in Marib through a post on the social media platform "X," detailing the current construction efforts. These initiatives are part of UNHCR's broader humanitarian endeavors to provide essential housing and protection to those displaced by conflict and other crises.

UNHCR, in collaboration with its humanitarian partners, is conducting field visits to displacement sites and IDP settlements. These assessments are crucial for evaluating specific needs and identifying the most affected families who will benefit from the new housing units. This systematic approach ensures that aid is directed to those most in need.

The UNHCR highlighted that a significant number of displaced families in Marib continue to reside in dilapidated shelters that lack basic protection and are insufficient against harsh climatic conditions, including extreme heat, floods, and strong winds. These inadequate living conditions pose substantial risks to the well-being of the displaced population.

According to the latest government statistics, approximately 42,000 displaced families in Marib are living in worn-out tents and temporary shelters that have exceeded their lifespan. These families face escalating risks from climate-related disasters, underscoring the urgent need for immediate support in the shelter sector.
