The unification of Yemen, declared on May 22, 1990, stands as a pivotal historical event at national, regional, and global levels, embodying a people's dream and a leader's determination. This historic achievement was realized through the wise leadership of the late former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in agreement with the then Secretary-General of the Yemeni Socialist Party, Ali Salem Al-Beidh. Yemeni unification represents the culmination of the nation's historical trajectory, influenced by converging domestic and international political circumstances. These included foreign interventions leading to occupations and dynastic rule in the north, and British occupation in the south. However, the September 26, 1962, and October 14, 1963, revolutions, alongside the Cold War's repercussions, paved the way for fulfilling this national aspiration. Despite international developments impacting negotiations between the two Yemeni states, appropriate measures facilitated the desired success. President Saleh, in collaboration with Al-Beidh, secured a historic accomplishment, aligning with the aspirations of all Yemenis for unity and recognizing its potential for broad political, social, and economic development. Following unification, Yemen experienced unprecedented political, media, and party-based openness, with the establishment of dozens of parties and the publication of hundreds of newspapers and magazines. This era also saw democratic progress, including the first parliamentary elections in 1993, followed by presidential elections in 1999, and local council elections in 2001. Observers and politicians characterized the first two decades of unity as crucial for achieving broader goals and transitioning from a single-party system to a comprehensive institutional framework guaranteeing rights for all, including women. The investment and exploration sectors generated thousands of jobs for youth and bolstered the local economy. The first decade of unity witnessed extensive economic, developmental, educational, and political openness across all governorates, marked by the establishment of hundreds of universities, colleges, schools, and research centers. The tourism sector also flourished, creating additional employment opportunities. Through these achievements, Yemen compressed decades of progress into a decade and a half, solidifying Yemeni unification as the paramount event in its ancient and modern history. |
