Egypt Urges Activation of Joint Arab Security Amid Escalating Regional Tensions

Egypt has issued an urgent appeal to Arab nations calling for the immediate activation of the concept of "joint Arab national security" to confront escalating regional military escalation, driven by recent reciprocal military actions between the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other, which included Iranian strikes impacting Arab states.

This demand was articulated by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry during an emergency meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers, convened at the invitation of Saudi Arabia and attended by member states, to discuss "Iranian aggressions against Arab nations." Shoukry stressed the necessity of activating shared cooperative frameworks to deal effectively with current threats, specifically proposing the formation of a joint Arab force to safeguard member states and preserve their sovereignty.

The Egyptian Minister reaffirmed Cairo's steadfast position in condemning all "Iranian aggressions" targeting Arab countries, rejecting any attempt to justify these actions, which he characterized as flagrant violations of the principles of good neighborliness and established international law.

In a related context, Shoukry advocated for prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy as the paramount strategy to de-escalate military tensions, warning against the grave risks associated with continued escalation and the imperative to prevent the region from descending into widespread chaos.

These Egyptian maneuvers are part of intensive diplomatic efforts recently led by Cairo, involving high-level communications with leaders and foreign ministers of affected nations, alongside supporting the convening of this emergency session in coordination with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain.

For their part, Arab Foreign Ministers strongly condemned the "Iranian aggressions" that affected Gulf Arab states, Jordan, and Iraq during the meeting, describing them as illegal and unprecedented acts that constitute a serious breach of the sovereignty of these nations, undermining regional and international peace and security, and a clear contravention of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.
