Yemen Mine Clearance Project Removes Over 6,600 Explosives in 20 Days

The Masam mine clearance project teams in Yemen successfully neutralized 6,682 mines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) between February 1st and February 20th of this month as part of ongoing efforts to clear war remnants across liberated Yemeni territories.

A statement released by the project's media office on Saturday detailed the composition of the recovered materials, which included 5,278 pieces of unexploded ordnance, 1,325 anti-tank mines, 38 anti-personnel mines, and 41 IEDs during the specified period.

The engineering teams achieved significant removal rates in the preceding weeks; during the final week of February, 2,676 explosive items were cleared. The third week of February alone saw the removal of 2,484 UXO items, 149 anti-tank mines, 17 anti-personnel mines, and 26 IEDs.

Furthermore, the statement indicated that during this operational timeframe, the teams managed to clear 729,273 square meters of land, focusing on securing residential areas, agricultural zones, and key transportation routes. In the Midi district, the cumulative total of mines, UXO, and IEDs removed since operations commenced there has reached 8,252 items.

Providing a cumulative overview, Osama bin Yousef Al-Qusaibi, Director-General of the Masam project, announced that since the project's inception in late June 2018 up to February 20, 2026, a total of 544,187 explosive items have been cleared. This aggregate figure comprises 378,257 UXO items, 8,403 IEDs, 150,435 anti-tank mines, and 7,092 anti-personnel mines.

Al-Qusaibi confirmed that the total area liberated from explosive hazards since the start of operations stands at 77,937,620 square meters, underscoring the continuous humanitarian commitment to mitigating mine risks for civilians and enhancing the safety of local communities across various governorates in Yemen.
