Security Forces in Hadhramaut Seize Gang Distributing Counterfeit Saudi Currency

Security agencies in Wadi Hadhramaut, eastern Yemen, announced the successful disruption of a counterfeit currency operation, resulting in the apprehension of a specialized gang involved in circulating fake Saudi Riyal denominations.

The Criminal Investigation Department for Wadi and Hadramaut Desert issued a statement via security media confirming that the operation led to the seizure of three individuals possessing a total of 27,000 counterfeit Saudi Riyals, all of which were 500-riyal banknotes.

The arrest followed intensive investigation and meticulous follow-up initiated by an official report from a Khat seller in the city of Seiyun market. The vendor reported being defrauded after receiving a counterfeit 500-riyal banknote as payment for his merchandise.

Upon receiving the complaint, the specialized authorities immediately commenced intelligence gathering and tracking of the suspects. This effort culminated in the capture of the individuals inside a city hotel, achieved through coordination with the Tourism Police and the participation of a military force from the Binin camp.

Initial investigations revealed that the accused confessed to their involvement in distributing the counterfeit currency, which they admitted to using to purchase weapons, stolen vehicles, and other goods. They further disclosed acquiring the fake currency from an individual residing in an adjacent governorate based on a specific exchange rate, paying 200 Saudi Riyals for every 1,000 counterfeit Riyals purchased.

The statement confirmed that coordination has been established with the Public Funds Prosecution to complete the necessary legal procedures against those detained. The Criminal Investigation Department reaffirmed its commitment to combating forgery and fraud, urging citizens to exercise caution, verify the authenticity of currency they handle, and immediately report any suspected cases.
