Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte revealed that there is a growing inclination within the European Union to officially designate Yemen's Houthi group as a terrorist organization, while simultaneously reaffirming the Netherlands' firm commitment to supporting the internationally recognized Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government.

The disclosure was made during a meeting between Rutte and the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. The two leaders discussed the evolving situation in Yemen, focusing on the security challenges stemming from Houthi escalation and its broader regional and international ramifications.

During their discussions, Al-Alimi urged the adoption of a "new approach" to neutralize the Houthi threat. This strategy, he argued, must involve intensifying political, economic, and military pressure on the group. He specifically called upon European partners to broaden the scope of sanctions to encompass the financing and smuggling networks associated with the Houthis, drawing a parallel with measures implemented against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Al-Alimi cautioned that any perceived leniency toward the Houthis risks prolonging the conflict, thereby endangering regional stability and global economic security. He stressed that confronting this threat necessitates a significantly stricter and more coordinated international stance designed to curtail the group's capacity to finance its ongoing military operations.
